Installing clear glass panels in a commercial storefront might look simple—but doing it right takes careful planning, the right tools, and a good understanding of best practices. Whether you’re a seasoned glazing contractor or a general contractor looking to install glass, this guide will walk you through the essential steps to ensure a smooth, safe, and efficient installation process.
Step 1: Measure Twice, Order Once
Before anything else, accurate measurements are key. Use a quality measuring tape to check the width and height of each panel opening. Always measure from multiple points (top, middle, and bottom) to account for any shifts or uneven areas. Subtract 1/8 inch from your smallest measurement to ensure a snug—but not too tight—fit.
When ordering, be clear on the type of clear glass you need—tempered, laminated, or insulated—based on safety codes and energy needs.
Step 2: Prepare the Opening
Clean the area where the glass will sit. Remove old sealant, debris, or anything that could cause uneven placement. Ensure your frame is square and level, and double-check the fit with temporary spacers or mock panels if needed. A secure frame equals a secure glass panel.
This is also the time to inspect the aluminum framing or storefront materials. Look for damage or corrosion. If you’re working with Sky Building Materials’ aluminum systems, you can be confident in their long-term performance.
Step 3: Install Setting Blocks and Sealants
Setting blocks are a must—they keep the glass raised slightly off the bottom of the frame, which helps prevent pressure cracks and allows for proper drainage. Place one block about 6 inches in from each end.
Next, apply a high-quality silicone or glazing sealant approved for commercial storefronts. This creates a watertight seal and keeps wind and water from penetrating the building. Choose a sealant that works with both the glass type and the frame material.
Step 4: Carefully Set the Panel
With a team of at least two people, lift the glass panel using glass suction cups. Slowly tilt and place the panel into the opening, bottom first, resting it gently on the setting blocks. Make sure the panel is centered and properly aligned.
Do not force the glass. Let it slide naturally into place. Tight fits or pressure can lead to breaks—especially in large or tempered panels.
Step 5: Secure and Seal
Once the panel is in place, insert the glazing beads or pressure plates as required by your framing system. Check that everything is even and tight.
Apply a final bead of sealant around the perimeter. Smooth it with a tool or gloved finger to create a clean, finished look. Allow proper curing time according to the sealant manufacturer’s instructions before cleaning or exposing it to weather.
Step 6: Final Inspection and Cleanup
Give the installation a final check for alignment, gaps, or sealant skips. Wipe down the glass with a non-ammonia cleaner to remove fingerprints or marks. Keep the area clean to present a professional finish for the client.
Safety tip: Always wear gloves, eye protection, and non-slip shoes when working with glass. If you’re installing from a height, use proper fall protection equipment.
